Medina, Albion open playoffs at home

Medina Journal-Register — Albion and Medina are set to open the Section VI girls basketball playoffs with home games this week.

No. 7 seed Albion will host No.10 Alden at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a Class B-1 opener. 

The Purple Eagles went 9-5 during the Niagara-Orleans League campaign and finished the regular season with a 9-9 overall record. Alden brings a 10-8 record into the playoffs. The winner will visit No. 2 East Aurora (13-5) on Saturday.

Eboni Taylor leads Albion’s balanced attack with 181 points (10.6 ave.) while Kelsee Soule has tallied 169 (9.9 ave) and Justice Nauden 123 (8.2 ave.) Taylor also has 100 rebounds, 37 steals and 4 assists; Soule 144 rebounds, 30 steals and 25 assists; Nauden 55 steals, 42 rebounds and 40 assists and Sarah Papponetti 82 rebounds, 48 steals, 43 assists and a 4.9 scoring average.

Medina, which is seeded No. 3, will open the Class B-2 playoffs at home at 2 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Tuesday’s No. 11 JFK vs. No. 6 Cleveland Hill game.

Medina went 9-5 during the N-O season and brings a 12-6 overall record into the playoffs.

The Mustangs have been sparked by Alba Perez who has scored 264 points (16.5 ave.) and grabbed off 264 rebounds. She also has 58 steals and 20 blocks. Abby Button has also grabbed off 111 rebounds.

Also in Class B-2 action, No. 9 Roy-Hart will visit N-O foe No. 8 Akron at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will visit top seeded Wilson on Saturday.

Roy-Hart split a pair of regular season meetings with Akron winning the first encounter 36-33 and losing the second 32-23. Wilson swept both games from Roy-Hart (59-26 and 53-40) and from Akron (47-23 and 59-32).

Also in Class B-1 on Tuesday, No. 5 Newfane will host No. 12 Lackawanna.

In Class C-1, No. 6 Barker (6-12) will visit No. 3 Tapestry of Buffalo (12-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Perfect Finish

Wilson 54, CSAT 47

BUFFALO - Wilson competed a perfect 14-0 N-O championship season with a 54-47 victory over CSAT Friday.

Dana Smith had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks; Emily Lasher 14 points, 11 rebounds and five steals and Jamie Curry 10 points, six steals and four assists to spark the attack for Wilson which has won four straight N-O titles going 54-2 during that stretch.

Trailing 12-10 after one quarter, Wilson outscored CSAT 37-24 over the middle two periods to key the win.
