Mustangs rompin playoff opener

Medina Journal-Register — Roaring out to a commanding 29 point half-time advantage, No. 11 seed Medina coasted to a 70-40 victory over visiting No. 14 Wilson Tuesday in the opening round of the Section VI Class B-2 boys basketball playoffs.

Ryan Thompson scored 18 including four threes, Ben McPherson 14 and Lonnie Taylor 10 to lead a parade of 11 point getters for Medina.

Emmitt Dinse led Wilson with 18 including three threes.

Taking charge at the outset, Medina jumped out to a 21-7 first quarter lead as Taylor and McPherson both had three baskets, Thompson two threes and Jason Hellwig one three.

Keeping the momentum, the Mustangs stretched the advantage to 29, 42-13, at the half.  Thompson, Dan Brown, Larry Bruning and Dylan Lewis all hit threes to highlight that surge which also included a pair of baskets by McPherson.

The Mustangs maintained a 32 point, 57-25, advantage at the three-quarter mark as Taylor, Thompson and McPherson each had a pair of baskets in the third period.

Medina though has little time to savor the win as the Mustangs visit No. 6 Southwestern at 7 this evening in the second round. Medina is now 7-12 while Southwestern is at 12-6.

Wilson finishes the season at 1-18.

Bennett 71, Albion 53

ALBION - Pulling away down the stretch, No. 13 Bennett defeated No. 12 Albion 71-53 Tuesday in the opening round of the Section VI Class B-1 playoffs.

Leading by just 27-23, at the half, and by just six, 45-39, at the three-quarter mark, Bennett used a 26-14 fourth period surge to claim the win.

AJ Ayala poured in a game high 31 points, including five threes, to spark Bennett. Ayala tallied 13 in the third period and 10 more in the fourth including three threes.

Freddie Koester scored 24 and Ryan Fannin 15 for Albion. Koester tallied 10 in the third period to keep the Purple Eagles close.

Fannin also grabbed off 14 rebounds and Marquise Riddick 13.

Albion finishes the season at 2-17.

Gananda 70, Holley 36

GANANDA -  Jumping out to a 10-0 lead at the outset, No. 6 Gananda went on to defeat No. 11 Holley 70-36 in a Section V Class C-1 opening round game.

Kyle Bell scored 14 and Will Barniak nine for Holley which trailed 30-14 at the half.
