Nearly three dozen local wrestlers are set to compete for sectional titles and a spot in the state championships this weekend.
Medina, Albion and RoyHart matmen will be competing in the Section VI D2 (small schools) championships tomorrow at East Aurora. Lyndonville, Holley and Kendall grapplers will be competing in the Section V D2 championships today and tomorrow at RIT.
Medina will be represented by the duo of senior Tristan Hamner (152) and junior Matt Montesanti (285) who both captured Section VI Class C titles last weekend. Hamner, who is seeded No. 1, is a defending sectional champion. Montesanti is seeded No. 2.
Lyndonville’s contingent is led by a quintet of matmen who captured Class B titles last weekend including Tony Recco (99), Sam Recco (120), Josh Brabon (138), Brooks Boyle (152) and Alex Rodriguez (145). Walter Breese and Dustin Hinkley round out the Tigers qualifiers. Sam Recco and Boyle are both top seeds.
Sam Recco, a defending sectional champion, brings a 37-1 record into the competition while Boyle is 43-3, Tony Recco 39-3, Brabon 34-9, Rodriguez 28-5, Breese 26-19 and Hinkley 22-13.
Albion has advanced five wrestlers including Aaron Burnside (113), Greg Blank (160), Mitch Pate (170), Dylan Burkhardt (220) and Devon Novak (285).
Holley has advanced the largest contigent of 11 grapplers led by defending sectional champions Quinton Murphy (138) and Kacee Sauer (285). The Hawks will also be represented by Taylor Klimack (99), Andrew Flanagan (99), Alan White (113), Sam Mauro (120), Martin Beadle (126), Tim Butler (145), Nick Winkley (170), Nick Cuccaro (195) and Mike Silvis (220).
Murphy, Sauer, Flanagan and Silvis all captured titles last weekend to lead Holley to the Class BB championship.
Roy-Hart’s delegation is led by the quartet of Garrett Baugher (99), Matt McCauley (138), Drew Hull (145) and Alex Jensen (220) who all earned Class C titles last weekend. In capturing the Class C team title the Rams have also advanced Zach Bickle and Greg Johnston who swick who took fourth.
Sx Kendall wrestlers have advanced including Avery Iqbal (99) who placed second at the Class B tourney; Mason Requa (120), Jacob Requa (126) and Josh Vogt (152) who placed third, Alwx Bierworth (113) who was fourth and Alex McLaren (145) who took sixth.
