NIGHT & DAY: Students, teachers mix for Studio 2010 exhibit

Gallery currently hosting 13th annual studio show

It’s taken years of experience to produce the Studio 2010 show at Partners in Art Gallery.

Joan Horn, one of the two partners of the gallery’s name, said the new exhibit marks the gallery’s 13th annual studio show.

“It features artists who are either teaching or painting or studying at Partners in Art. You have to be affiliated with the studio in some way,” she said. “It shows a wide range of work — people who are just starting their art careers to people who have been painting for years and years and are professionals.”

The exhibit features 109 works by 60 artists, most students, but some also instructors. The media range from oil to watercolors, pastels to pen and graphite — and occasionally something unusual.

“There’s even one that is actually a carved painting,” Horn said. “She actually carves the painting surface and then applies an oil glaze to it. It’s a very interesting technique.”

The aforementioned artist, Barbara Rellinger, is in her fifth year studying at the studio. She comes by the talent honestly: Her late father was a self-taught wood carver.

“I had all his carving tools,” she said. “A friend had taken a class in country carving and was showing me what she learned. I thought, oh, I have all those tools of my dad’s. I’ll see what I can do.”

The work, titled “On the Rocks,” shows a relief of rounded, surf-beaten rocks crowned by a lighthouse. Rellinger also has an oil painting in the show.

“I love it,” she said of Partners in Art. “They’re all wonderful ... and they help you really find your potential.”

Partners in Art teacher Jody Ziehm of Wheatfield picked her piece “Bird in Paradise” for the exhibit. The watercolor painting was taken from a photo she took in Longboat Key, Fla.

“It’s a tropical piece,” she said. “I thought it would be nice for the winter.”

Ziehm, who has taught watercolor classes at the studio for about nine years, said the exhibit is a great chance for the gallery — and the artists — to display what they’re learned.

“Students look forward to this. To have a painting featured, and invite their family and see their works finished and matted and framed —it’s great,” she said.

“Some of them don’t aspire to go any further, but the idea they can see their work here on display is wonderful.”

During one recent day at the gallery, students from one of Ziehm’s watercolor classes perused the paintings, exclaiming over the reflective quality of the water in Rellinger’s “Scarborough, Maine,” the rendering of a cookie cutter in a still life by Phil Smolinski and the vivid colors in a still life by Laura Perillo — and Ziehm’s “Bird in Paradise.”

Student Sandy Brown, who had paintings “Maine Harbor” and “Dingle Sunrise” in the show, said they enjoy the opportunity to exhibit their works.

“It’s fun to come to the reception, mingle with the other artists, see all their works. There’s a lot of talent,” she said. “It’s fun to see the people you’ve painted with.”
