Bertrand J. Cardone

MEDINA —

"Luck affects everything, let your hook always be cast; in the stream you least expect it, there will be a fish." Ovid

Bertrand (Bert) Cardone of Medina passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at the Orchard Manor Nursing Home. Bert was born in Medina, NY on January 28, 1917, son of the late Dominic and Mary (Scolozzi) Cardone.
A lifelong resident of Medina, Bert was a well-known, avid, sportsman and outdoorsman who combined his passion for hunting, fishing and marksmanship into launching several successful related businesses, including the Medina Trading Post, a recreational vehicle dealership, the first Ski-Doo dealership in the Western New York area along with opening Cardone Dodge. In his later years, Bert became a sought after fishing guide in Sturgeon Falls, Canada, frequented the Seneca Niagara Casino and lived his life true to his own philosophy of working for 50 years yet never having a job.
During World War II, he was a member of the New York State National Guard and later enlisted in the Navy serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater taking part in the Invasion of the Philippines. Over the years, he would remark that one of his crowning achievements during the war occurred on United State soil when he was home on leave and managed to persuade Arlene Miller to elope with him on August 4, 1943. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, past president of the Medina Conservation Club, a New York State Rifle Sharpshooter, member of Butts Clark Post 204 and the American Legion.
He is survived by Arlene, his devoted wife and business partner of 69 years; two children, Jack (Peggy) Cardone, Lockport and Gilda (Thurman) Mallard, Avon, NY; four granddaughters, Michelle (Doug) Cimino, Hatfield Pennsylvania, Amber (Ryan) Conway, Avon, NY, Jenna and Justine Cardone of Grand Island, NY. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Madison Cimino and Braden Conway; a brother, Vincent (Rose) Cardone; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank and Joseph Cardone; sisters, Alicia and Angeline Cardone, Kay Chiarolanza, Alice Rosato and Sara Calandra.
Relatives and friends may call on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 12-3 PM with a service at 2 PM at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 West Center Street, Medina, NY, with Fr. Daniel J. Fawls officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home following the funeral service by members of Lincoln Post #1483, VFW and Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion. The family will gather at the Diana Theater on Main Street Medina following the service to receive friends and share reminisces. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in Bert's name to the American Red Cross for the disaster relief efforts resulting from Hurricane Sandy.
