Kathlyn Janet Canham Carnes

MEDINA —  

Kathlyn Janet Canham Carnes, 91, formerly of Medina, NY, passed away on December 30, 2012 in Pinehurst, NC. Janet was born in Royalton Township, New York, to Alfred and Mary Kirkpatrick on February 19, 1921.
Valedictorian of her class, she married Milton Canham of Ridgeway, NY in 1940 and had three children, Charles (Josephine) Canham, Apple Valley, UT, Martha Jane Davidson (deceased September 4, 2012), and Arnold (Sally) Canham, Buffalo Grove, IL. Janet is survived by three sisters, Margaret Grenier, Dubois, PA, Jean Winters, Middleport, NY, and Doris Kerrison, Lockport, NY; grandchildren, Michael (Debra) Davidson, Virginia Beach, VA,  Mark (Kelly) Davidson, Raeford, NC, Christopher Davidson, Tulsa, OK, John Canham, Webster, NY, Virginia  Kathlyn (Canham) Storino, Hinsdale, IL, Matthew Canham, Denver, CO, and Timothy Canham, Buffalo Grove, IL. Janet is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Janet was a longtime member of the Medina Rebekah's, serving in all positions for many years. She worked at Goodwin's Pharmacy on Main St., retiring after several years. Janet loved music, singing with her sisters during and after high school. She taught herself how to play the piano and organ, enjoying both until the past few years. Janet loved canning fresh fruits from the farm on Ridge Rd. and growing a large garden full of varied vegetables. She learned how to be a great pastry chef from her mother, Mary Davis Kirkpatrick. After the death of Milton Canham, she married widower Oakley Carnes of Englewood, FL, in 1987. Janet and Oakley ultimately lived in Florida and Western North Carolina, residing about six months in each. In 1995, they built a custom home in Hendersonville, NC and located there year round.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 4:00 PM at the Middleport Universalist Church, located on the corner of Main St. and Church St. Middleport, NY with the Pastor, Rev. Paul Letiecq officiating. Memorials may be made in the name of Janet Carnes to: Duke University, Bryan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, 2200 W. Main St. Suite A-200, Durham, NC 27704. Local arrangements were made through the Bates & Tuttle Funeral Home, 226 Pearl St. Medina.
