Frederick Frank Schmidt

LOCKPORT — Frederick Frank Schmidt passed away at Wuesthoff Hospice House in Rockledge, Florida, on September 14, 2011. He was 89 years old. Born on December 22, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Frederick C. and Anna Glatz Schmidt.

Fred graduated from Austin High School in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy from October 1941 until December 1945, and taught aircraft engine repair at Navy Pier in Chicago and Pomona Airbase, New Jersey. After World War II, Fred was an engineer at Skil, Inc., in Chicago. He married his high school sweetheart, Lois June Forman in Atlantic City, New Jersey on May 12, 1945. Fred was transferred to Loud Wendell in Middleport in 1951. From 1961 to 1984 he owned and operated Specialty Grinding, Inc. in Middleport, where he was a well-respected member of the community and known for his integrity, generosity, and kindness. He resided in Lockport, NY and retired to Middleport in 1986. In 2005 he moved to Cocoa, Florida to live with his son and family.

Fred had a great appreciation for the arts and built a museum quality art glass collection. He and his wife, Lois, were avid antique collectors. After retiring, they traveled between their home on the Erie Barge Canal in Middleport and their home in Holden Beach, North Carolina. They enjoyed vacations in the United States, Puerto Rico and Europe.  Fred was a member of St. StephenÕs Church in Middleport, the November Birthday Club, and an honorary member of Mother's Club.

Fred was the beloved husband of the late Lois Schmidt; father of Pamela Malcuit of Marlboro, Massachusetts, Valerie (Byron) Demmer of Longmont, Colorado; Beverly Glor of Williamsville, New York, Brian Schmidt (Pamela) of Cocoa, Florida; and Adrienne. He is also survived by six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one niece; a nephew, who shared his birthday; and his brother, Raymond Schmidt of Niceville, Florida.

A memorial service will be held  Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Stephen's Church, 21 Vernon Street in Middleport with the Rev. Joseph Badding officiating. There will be a reception in the parish hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to the Middleport Free Library, 9 South Vernon Street, Middleport, NY 14105.
