VALLEY: Make me an offer — please

MEDINA —  

Occasionally, a more serious situation — more serious, at least, than you’ll usually find here — commands my attention and I feel inclined to mention it. I wasn’t asked to do this, but I do so because of the opportunity I’m afforded to let the public know that their help is needed and would be greatly appreciated.

On Saturday, June 25, there will be the inaugural Annual Challenger Sports League Tournament. This is a golf tournament being chaired by PGA apprentice David Rose of Lockport. Dave is the assistant pro at Shelridge Country Club in Medina. And this tournament means a lot to him … simply because it means a lot too so many.

Basically, the benefit is for a non-profit group that is trying to raise funds to provide sporting and entertainment events for the physically and mentally handicapped citizens in the community. What a terrific way to build smiles on the faces of those who haven’t been given the same privileges that so many of us take for granted.

Here’s the deal: You can play golf and have a great time all the while making a difference in someone’s life. It’s a win-win situation! Everyone is welcome.

It’s a “scramble” format so the pressure is off. Golf skills and the need to play well are replaced with laughter and fun. (In other words, even hackers like myself can enjoy it. Don’t be intimidated.) After golfing, there’s food, games, music and more.

The tourney is at Shelridge Country Club in Medina. Players, tee sponsors and gift donations (for raffles) are needed. Cash donations would also be welcome. Please help!

On another topic, I’ve got just enough room to mention that I really appreciate the feedback that I get on the various From the Valley columns. An article that I wrote a couple of weeks ago about an incident that happened in the local Tim Horton’s seemed to generate a little more response than normal.

Even the kind folks at Tim Horton’s seemed pleased with the column. In fact, they were so pleased, that they treated me to free coffee. What a deal! But it should be known that I’ve never said or written anything with the intent of getting something in return.

By the way, those guys and gals at Hartway Motors are great — they are courteous friendly and helpful. They are tops! But they’re not alone — tied with them in first place is George and his fine staff at Orleans Ford. What a pair of terrific car and truck dealerships. Two exceptional outfits.

And although I don’t know Paul Mullane personally, I have friends who do. And they say he’s one heck of a guy. I’ll bet he’s got some nice looking, mint condition, 4WD, red, extended-cab, 8-cylinder pick-up trucks on his lot. New or used.

  • I can clearly see my mistakes

     

    For some reason, God — in his infinite wisdom — made me just shy of perfect. Yes, it’s true. I have faults, but being humble isn’t one of them.

    While there are scores of people who would likely disagree, in my opinion, my less-than-20/20 vision ranks right up there amongst my biggest flaws.

Among those that generated the most press and most talk were the black bears that frequented the area for a couple of months. The beasts elicited either fear or appreciation, depending on one’s perception of bruins. More often than not, the former emotion ruled the day.

  • Governor needs to stay on point

    Last week in the governor’s State of the State address, Cuomo said he’s taking on a new job. He’s going to be an advocate for the kids. In fact, Cuomo went so far as to say that he’s going to be the only advocate that kids have.

    Am I the only one amused by the fact that few (if any) people have ever seen a woman in a dress like the ones in the fashion section of a newspaper? I’m talking about the illustrated apparel — designed by people with one name — that’s supposed to be what people will be wearing in the next fashion cycle.

  • confer Recognize our hometown heroes

     

    If you haven’t driven through Holley this summer, you’ve missed quite a sight. The light posts and electrical poles throughout the village are adorned with Hometown Heroes banners. Each one recognizes someone from the village who is actively serving in the military. The attractive banners are 72 inches tall and about half as wide and each one is adorned with a large photo of the serviceman/woman along with his or her name and branch.

    In late June of 2010, I wrote a column about my friend, Dave Cook. Back then, Dave and his wife, Carol (and daughter, Chelsea) had been through a Hell-ish scare when a liaison with the U.S. Marine Corps had left a message about their son, Sgt. Trevor T. Cook. Trevor was serving in Afghanistan at the time.

    As long as the Public Service Commission allows a pending rate change from National Grid — and there’s no reason they wouldn’t — the electric company’s customers will see significant savings come Jan. 1. The bill for the typical household/apartment will be nearly $9.50 lower per month, while homeowners with families (who use more power) drop by almost $16. That’s $114 and $192 in extra spending money per year. Not too shabby.

    I was making a delivery last week in my Napa pick-up truck when I noticed another truck several car lengths ahead of me. At first, I thought that it, too, was a work truck, because I could see a large sign across the tailgate.
