AREA SKATING: NT skaters headed to nationals
Six skaters from North Tonawanda’s Rainbow Roller Rink are competing this week in the 2008 Roller Figure Skating National Championships, held in Lincoln, Neb.
The skaters just returned from Springfield, Mass., where they competed in the North East Regional Figure Championship.
In the Classic A Men’s Figure division, 22-year-old Joshua Bradley won the gold medal.
Michael Cooper, 13, took home four golds, in the Freshman A Solo Dance, Freshman A Boys Figures, Junior World Class Men Figures and Youth International Solo Dance.
Danielle Johnson, 13, won gold in the Elementary A Girls Figure. She also took silver in Freshman A Solo Dance and Elementary Girls Loop, as well as being the 2007 International Solo Dance defending champion.
Cooper and Johnson teamed up to take gold in the Freshman A Team Dance.
A trio of Rainbow skaters placed in the Elementary B Girls Figure event, as Angel Marie Gonzalez took silver, and Savannah Bartlett and Marisa Zakes took bronze. Gonzalez, 11, also took a bronze home in Elementary A solo dance.
All six skaters train at Rainbow Rink on Oliver Street under the coaching of Maurice Cooper Jr. and Barbara Sweda.
