Senior Mary Cain finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds, 12 steals and 10 blocks to help Niagara Catholic to a 43-41 overtime win over visiting Christian Central Academy in non-league girls basketball action Saturday.
Cain scored 14 of her points after halftime, forcing the Crusaders out of their gimmick defense. She also nailed a pair of free throws during the waning seconds of overtime to put the game away.
Sarah Signorelli, who finished with 15 points, carried NC (7-9 overall) in the opening 16 minutes, according to coach Larry Puzan. Freshman Rachel Sparks grabbed 12 boards in her first varsity start for the Patriots.
Lauren Stuitio had 18 points, including two 3-pointers in the extra session, to lead CCA (8-10).
Roy-Hart 53, Newfane 36
MIDDLEPORT — Olivia Kelkenberg scored 15, Jenna Harrington 12 and Kim Harrington 10 to lead Roy-Hart (8-2) over Newfane (4-6) in Niagara-Orleans action on Saturday.
Harrington also had 12 rebounds and four assists, Kelkenberg nine rebounds and Jesse DeWaters seven assists.
Roy-Hart jumped out to a 15-6 first-quarter lead. Up 26-19 at the half, Roy-Hart put a lock on the victory by outscoring Newfane 16-6 in the third quarter. Kelkenberg had eight in the period as the Lady Rams opened up a 42-25 lead at the three-quarter mark.
Sam Kelly led Newfane with 11 points.
Federation Hockey
N-W 7, Frontier 1
Matt Weinholtz had three assists and Alex Kammerer stopped 15 shots as the defending large school Federation champion Falcons cruised to a league win at the Amherst Pepsi Center. There were seven different goal scorers for Wheatfield (13-3-2 overall, 10-2-2 large schools).
Niagara Falls 6, Clarence 6
Paul Myers scored with three seconds left on an assist from Andrew Pothier and Joe Grozio to help the Wolverines earn the tie in large schools action. Also for NFHS (3-10-1), David Kok had two goals and an assist, Richie DeMarco had a goal and two assists, Joe Doan netted a goal and an assist and Michael Boyd had a goal.
Lancaster 8, Lockport 2
Josh Long and Matt Wright scored for the Lions, but it wasn’t enough in large schools play. Tracy Miracle and Rick Eberhart each had two assists for LHS (0-16). George Scouras netted a hat trick for the Redskins (10-3-2).
Sweet Home 4, Lewiston-Porter 2
David James buried two goals for the Lancers, who fell to 3-10 with the loss at Niagara’s Dwyer Arena. James Stewart made 18 saves for Lew-Port.
For Sweet Home, John Rein scored two goals, including the game-winner.
Boys Basketball
St. Mary’s 72, Cardinal O’Hara 55
Brendan Brady had 18 points for the Hawks, but it wasn’t enough in Monsignor Martin action. Daz Knight added 15 points for O’Hara (2-15 overall, 0-7 MMAA). Vince Kazmierczak had a game-high 23 points for the Lancers, who led 25-11 after the opening quarter.
