GRAND ISLAND — Scoring is nice, but grabbing a rebound or dishing an assist or even rotating over on defense to take a charge can be the difference between winning and losing.
Like most teenagers it took a while for that to register with the Grand Island girls basketball squad, but once it happened, the Vikings took off.
Now, GI is playing Section V champion Greece Arcadia at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gates Chili High School for a shot at the Class A state semifinals.
“For any team to be successful, each person must understand and accept their role,” GI coach Jen Banker said. “When that finally happened, this group really started to jell and play their best basketball.”
Here’s a look at the Vikings’ roster with Banker’s assessment of each player’s role.
Kallie Banker: “Her job is to control the ball. She’s the decision maker for us.”
Brooke DeMarco: “She’s the one under the boards. We call her our garbage player.”
Mary Scherrer: “She’s our workhorse. She does all the little things behind the scenes.”
Cassie Oursler: “Her job is to box out, rebound and finish those shots inside.”
Danielle Wegrzyn: “She has to hit the open shot for us when it’s there.”
Maria Guidotti: “She always has to be ready to come off the bench.”
Ambria Tim: “Defense and rebounding are her jobs when she gets in there.”
Dom DeGregorio: “She plays the point for the other team in practice.”
Jessica Yarnes: “She’s a defensive player that puts pressure on others in practice.”
Jessica Osvath: “She’s the shooter on that other team in practice.”
Shannon Moody: “Every day she works hard underneath.”
Megan Karpie: “She came up from JV and helps out by being players on the other team.”
Alex London: “She’s also from the JV and has worked hard in practice.”
Kristin Wegrzyn: “Since she got hurt. she’s provided great leadership from the bench.”
Jenna Raepple: “She’s been very supportive since getting hurt.”

BANK SHOT
Grand Island’s Kallie Banker admittedly doesn’t know much about Viking great Carlin Hartman.
After all it’s been more than 20 years since Hartman finished his illustrious career with 1,518 points, the most by any Vikings basketball player ever.
