UB names new AD

AMHERST —

The University at Buffalo went with a mix of youth and experience in selecting Danny White as its new athletic director.

White, 32, will be the youngest athletic director in Division I-A, but comes to UB after serving as the senior associate athletic director at the University of Mississippi and executive director of Ole Miss' alumni association.

A former basketball player at Notre Dame, White was also an associate athletics director at Fresno State and is familiar with the Mid-American Conference, having worked in administration at Northern Illinois and on the men's basketball coaching staff at Ohio.

"Danny has an impressive and very well-rounded athletic portfolio. He clearly knows the world of intercollegiate athletics from nearly every vantage point," university president Satish Tripathi said. "What's more, he has a keen recognition of UB's great potential, and what it will take to realize this promise as we continue our institutional pursuit of excellence."

Athletic administration is White's "family business," as Tripathi said. His father, Ken, is the athletic director at Duke, and his brother, Brian, is an associate athletic director at Louisiana Tech, where another brother, Michael, is the men's basketball coach.

"UB is an incredible opportunity," White said. "This is a world-class institution. That's the first thing I noticed when present with this opportunity.

"Obviously, I've been working very hard to rise to the directors chair. I wanted to align myself with a world-class academic institution. Because of that institutional profile, there is no limit to how high we can take UB athletics."

As athletic director, White will lead the only full Division I-A athletics program in the State University of New York system, overseeing a department that offers 20 intercollegiate sports and has more than 500 student-athletes.

He replaces Warde Manuel, who led UB to unprecedented success in several sports, notably football, before leaving to take the athletic director job at UConn.

"I know there is a strong foundation in place," White said. "I know there are great people here and I'm very excited about working on that next chapter and, hopefully, working to take that next step."
