Mulkey to work out for Bills

BUFFALO — Former Niagara-Wheatfield and University at Buffalo basketball standout Byron Mulkey will return to the gridiron this weekend   as he has accepted an invitation to the Buffalo Bills’ rookie mini camp.

After completing a wildly-successful career as a walk-on point guard for the Bulls and graduating last year, Mulkey briefly   played professionally in Morocco. Since then, he’s returned to UB to work on his master’s degree, which is when his attention   turned to the pigskin.

“At the beginning of the second semester, I had an itch to play football,” Mulkey said in a release. “It’s been a while, but   to be honest, football came more naturally to me growing up than basketball did.”

Mulkey found a believer in UB men’s basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon, who got the 6-footer in touch with the Bills.

“Byron is the type of person that when he puts his mind to something he goes after it,” Witherspoon said. “I definitely think   that he will give them every reason to be staring at him.”

At N-W, Mulkey was an All-Western New York selection while playing quarterback and defensive back. He’s expected to take reps   at both defensive back and slot receiver this weekend.

“I know what I’ve been through to get me to this point and I know what I’m capable of managing when it comes to adversity,”   Mulkey said. “Who knows what could happen? I’m expecting the best and prepared for the worst and that has been the case all   along.”

Witherspoon added, “Byron will give them every ounce of energy and his effort and I would not be surprised to see him make   the team.”
