HS TRACK & FIELD: Miller takes second in shot put at states

Lockport senior Erin Miller capped off her remarkable high school throwing career with her best finish at the state meet.

Miller, who tossed the weight 44 feet and 3/4 of an inch, was runner-up to Lancaster standout Melissa Kurzdorfer in the federation shot put championship Saturday afternoon at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. She also took fourth in the federation discus and third in the Division I shot put. Kurzdorfer won all three events.

Another local standout, Niagara Falls senior Brian Archie, wrapped up his scholastic career with a third-place finish in the federation long jump championship.

The Niagara Gazette Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year was eighth in the Division I 100-meter championship earlier in the day. He also anchored the Wolverines’ 400-meter relay, which finished sixth in the federation championship. Darrien Payne, Oraine Allen and Johnny Mallard were also part of the relay.

Reigning Niagara Gazette Track & Field Athlete of the Year Evan Tsembelis of Grand Island took fourth in the 1,600-meter run. It was the Columbia signee’s final race as a scholastic competitor.

Tonawanda’s Brianna Snyder took sixth in the Division II 200-meter championship, Newfane’s Adam Irr was eighth in the 800 federation championship, North Tonawanda’s Jared Quinn was 20th in the 3,000 steeplechase federation championship, Lewiston-Porter’s Robby Seyler took 23rd in the pentathlon federation championship and Lockport’s 3,200 relay quartet of Jeremy Orton, Nic Dye, Drew Perilli and Brennon Cain finished 23rd in the federation championship race.
