LEWISTON —
At times, and even in tight spots, Niagara University centerman Chris Moran could be deliberate, often holding the puck an extra second while a streaking teammate got open before threading the perfect pass.
When it came to starting his professional hockey career, the leading assist man in Purple Eagles history used the same approach.
Rather than jump at an amateur tryout contract in South Carolina at the end of last season, Moran stayed to finish his studies in business marketing. The former Cardinal O’Hara student graduated from NU with his class in May.
Now, he’s ready to open the book on the pros, signing a deal with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. Moran, a first-team All-College Hockey America selection his senior year, was the third outgoing Niagara player to get a contract this summer. Earlier, defenseman Tyler Gotto signed with Toledo of the ECHL while another defender, Jim Burichin, inked a deal with the Texas Brahmas of the Central Hockey League.
Moran said he was simply waiting for all the pieces to fall into place.
“I was just being patient,” he said. “I really wanted to find the right fit. I had an offer (at the end of last season), but my school schedule wouldn’t allow me to take time off. And I’d put in four years of hard work, I didn’t want to have to go back in the summer and finish.”
Moran finished his career at Niagara not only as the leading assist man with 103, but tops in games played (146) and most rookie assists (31) as well. He was named the CHA rookie of the year following the 2006-07 season when he had 40 points in 37 games.
“Moran had an amazing career here at Niagara,” Niagara coach Dave Burkholder said in a release. “He has so much skill and truly loves the game of hockey. He will be a great addition to Elmira and we thank him for all that he did for Niagara hockey.”
As for his new home, Moran is eager to start with Elmira, which is fresh off a division title in the American Conference’s East Division.
The Jackals have a new coach in Malcolm Cameron, who coached the Florida Everblades the past two seasons.
Cameron knew plenty about Moran’s skillset and is eager to have him aboard.
“Chris had an outstanding four year college career, put up excellent numbers and is certainly very good on the power play,” Cameron said. “He also sees the ice very well.”
“I got to talk with coach Cameron and he basically knew more about me than I ever thought he would,” Moran added. “He’s got a great record and I’m excited to be a part of what they’re doing there.”
