A caring community was the theme at Albion Elementary School on Thursday, as a week-long food drive kicked off. Members of the high school Introduction to Musical Theater class performed an original musical based on the book “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch,” by Eileen Spinelli. The book tells the story of a grumpy, lonely man who works at a shoelace factory. On Valentine’s Day, he receives a candy-filled heart with a note that reads, “Somebody loves you.” This gesture changes the way Hatch feels and interacts with his neighbors and co-workers.
The book demonstrates a caring community theme, said Sue Starkweather of the Albion Central School District. She said that last year, the musical theater class performed a piece based on a book about recycling. After they watched last year’s musical, elementary students started a recycling program at the school. This year’s food drive benefits Community Action of Orleans and Genesee and focuses on community togetherness.
Starkweather said that the play and food drive were originally going to be held over the holiday season, but they wanted to help during an off time.
“Hunger is all year long,” Starkweather said. “We want to make sure Community Action has enough.”
