LYNDONVILLE: Students' work honors principles of Martin Luther King Jr.

LYDONVILLE — Even though students remember the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. every January, Lyndonville students had the opportunity recently to find ways to incorporate his teachings in their everyday life.

Principal Patrick Whipple said students grade in kindergarten through sixth grade were invited to participate in a contest sponsored through the state education department and office of general services.

“All the students (through sixth grade) participated in the event — it was something we could do as part of our character education program,” Whipple explained. “It was an essay and display contest to honor King and his principles of non-violence.”

An open house was held Friday afternoon in the high school’s Stroyan Auditorium foyer, where the public was invited to come look at the pieces submitted by students in the Primary, Elementary and Intermediate schools.

“We wanted to showcase everyone’s work for the community,” Whipple said.

The teams of teachers then selected one person per class to have the work entered in the statewide contest. All the projects, regardless of whether they win, will be on display in the Capitol building in January to commemorate King’s 80th birthday. The name of the contest was “Celebrating Greatness.”

“I’m glad we had the opportunity to participate,” Whipple said. “The project ties in with one of goals we have at the district level. The teachers told me they would like to do something like this every year.”
