Telling the community the fun things that Medina has to offer, the children in Karen Pane and Nancy Siegel’s third-grade classroom at Oak Orchard Elementary wrote their own book about the town, "Fun Things to Do in Medina."
Each of the 22 students wrote a story about an enjoyable activity people can do in Medina and then they illustrated it. Some of the stories and topics included fishing, going to Tops, horseback riding, golfing and trick or treating. The book was published by Nationwide Learning Inc. and Wendi Pencille, a parent, took a picture of the class for the front cover of the book.
Pane said that with this project, the students were able to learn all about the writing process — from ideas, to writing, editing, manuscripts, book binding and publishing.
“The project allowed me to incorporate reading, writing and social studies,” Pane said. “The project was highly motivational to the children. We hope people check our book out of the libraries, read it and try some of the fun things to do in Medina.”
On Thursday, the students gathered and held a reading of their book. Each student read his or her own story to the class. They also presented copies to the school’s library and to Lee-Whedon Memorial Library, so more could enjoy their work.
“They’re beautiful,” Lee-Whedon Library representative Catherine Cooper said. “Not many can say you have a book in a library.”
For student Shelby Green, being in a book was very exciting.
“I liked it,” she said of choosing the East Shelby Fire Hall Picnic as her topic. “It’s fun.”
Taiji Goodson was also very happy to be in a book that others can read.
“I thought it was good,” she said of her story about going out to eat with her family.
“Fun Things to do in Medina,” which is dedicated to the residents of the community, can now be checked out at the Lee-Whedon Library.
