Appealing to the many children with nothing to do over winter break, the Orleans United Coalition and Medina Area Association of Churches held a free family roller skating event on Monday. More than 180 children and adults attended the afternoon skate at the Lake Plains YMCA in Medina.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” said Drug-Free Communities community organizer Kaitlin Smith. “We did not expect this turnout.”
Like Smith, Pat Crowley, assistant director of prevention for the Genesee-Orleans Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, said that the coalition was very happy and surprised by the turnout of their first event and the many people, of all ages, in attendance.
As part of the coalition, it is important to hold activities where young people are in the community, but are in a safe place and not on the streets, Smith said. She said that in the future, they would like to hold more events like this throughout the county.
Besides being an enjoyable event, the family roller skate raised $58 in donations and 131 cans of food, to benefit MAAC’s food pantry.
Orleans United Coalition began in 2004, created by GCASA. Since then, it has been working on creating more programs and stressing the importance of a drug-free community among the youth in Orleans County.
